Welcome to the Figure/Ground Communication
Artist Interview Series!
With the addition of an Arts section, Figure/Ground Communication will bring artists working in a variety of disciplines and media into the conversation already in progress with other scholars, philosophers, and educators.
On a personal level, art was my first language: perhaps I drew before I spoke, or even better than I could speak. My practice of art went on hiatus while I pursued a career in psychoanalysis; I do both now and see them as sharing a similar sensibility as I practice them. Both are practiced in relative solitude, both are undertaken with minimal preconceived intentions, both invite a kind of open-door policy to interpretations.
Still, there are myriad paths to becoming and being an artist. In this new interview series, the emphasis is to highlight the career paths and studio practices of invited artists. The opportunity to be in conversation and virtually enter their studios is an incredible resource for students and other working artists, and we expect this series will offer insightful commentary on the processes and circumstances of art.
In 2013, we will be expanding the series to include interviews with artists in other disciplines- writers, musicians, filmmakers.
